Historical BackGround of Nepal Police Hospital

The health service of the Nepal Police started as a medical Infirmary Room (MI Room) in the Central Police Training Centre , Maharajgunj in 1956. After some time the Tribhuvan Chandra Military Hospital provided the health service to the Police. There were 18 beds set aside for the Police personnel who had to be admitted and the out patient department services could be availed during the OPD hours.

During the time of IGP Rom Bahadur Thapa a Forensic Laboratory was established in 1971 with a medical doctor and 11 health personnel to look after the health of the police personnel and to look into matters requiring forensic expertise. All these developments were good but various chiefs of police and the Police senior management team felt that it would boost the morale of the police and their family if the Police had a Police Hospital which would look after the health of the police personnel, retired police and their family.

In order to achieve this goal an executive committee lead by the then IGP D.B. Lama forwarded a proposal of establishing a Police Hospital  which was approved by the Government of Nepal. Immediately after this approval, the already existing building (Prachanda Bhawan) along with the land of the Mid Region Police Training Centre was handed over to the Birendra Police Hospital. The construction of the buildings for the Birendra Police Hospital was started at this site in Maharajgunj. Finally the Birendra Police Hospital (BPH) came into existence in 1984 AD (Chaitra, 2040 B.S.) as a government hospital serving and providing quility medical care to employees of Nepal Police, their families and retired police personnel. The Mid Region Police Training Centre was then transferred from Maharajgunj, Kathmandu to Bharatpur. The Hospital was formally inaugurated by the Late King Birendra on 9th April 1984 AD and the out patient, emergency and laboratory services were started on the very same day.
